I was on the STRUGGLE BUS with this review. I wanted to love this book so much. I am a huge fan of thrillers and this was to be my first venture into the horror sub-genre. So grateful to have this as a buddy read with some pals on #Bookstagram so we could share all fo the creepy things happening.
While I thought this has FANTASTIC imagery and gave you all the queasy feels of a horror story, it was just too much of a slow burn to get to the climax of the story. I did not want to DNF (“did not finish”) it, especially since I was involved with a buddy read, but I also genuinely wanted to get to the crux of it all.
So, my solution was to skip around 100 pages in the middle to finally see the whole thing wrap up (and wrap up it did!)
Because of my skipping around so much, I had to give it a lower rating. However, with that all being said, I think the author’s descriptions and the writing style was fabulous. I enjoyed the deep cousin-connection between Neomi and Catalina (I totally have one of those of my own in life). The dysfunctional family dynamic happening at High Place was enough to make your skin crawl, even without all the other legit spookiness.
Also, I’m super thankful I already hate mushrooms.
She was trapped between competing desires, a desire for a more meaningful connection and the desire to never change. She wished for eternal youth and endless merriment.
